Falcon VII is one of the legendary Kelly-Peterson 46's. Her H.I.N. is JKY46004-1082. Only 30 of these center-cockpit offshore cruisers were built, and they remain a much sought-after, well-built and capable yacht. Doug Peterson, the designer, and Jack Kelly, the builder, spent much time researching and implementing improvements to the more than 200 KP44's they had built. The result is the KP46.
With her 41 foot waterline, her low wetted surface for a cruising boat and her wine-glass transom, she is solid and speedy on all points of sail. We have logged speeds under sail of over 7 knots pushing hard to weather and of close to 9 knots off the wind. 180 mile days are common on these boats and 200 mile days are not unheard of. Under power she cruises at 7.3 knots at 2,100 rpm.
Falcon VII has been upgraded continually since we purchased her from her second owners. These upgrades include re-powering, new sails and all new wiring/electrical. Virtually all of her systems have been replaced within the last few years.
We have owned Falcon VII for eight years and she always conveys a feeling of security and comfort to those on board. From the chilly waters of Icy Strait in Alaska to the sun-drenched beaches of Mexico, she has taken us swiftly and safely from one adventure to another. She is easily handled by a cruising couple (we are in our 60's) and yet is spacious and comfortable enough to allow you to host family and guests. Due to family commitments, we must reluctantly allow her to continue with new owners at the helm, and to head for new horizons.
Before even going below, you are welcomed by the large and secure center cockpit. There is comfortable seating for eight on cockpit seats which are 6'-2" long — also perfect for those afternoon naps in the sun. With its full canvas enclosure, complete with shade panels, the cockpit provides protection from both the sun and from inclement weather. Visibility from the helm position is excellent and all instrumentation and electronics are close at hand.
As you descend the main companionway, the galley is to port and the navigation station is to starboard. The galley is a spacious and secure place to prepare meals, which is out of the main traffic flow yet has a direct view to the rest of the main cabin. The galley is fully equipped for voyaging, and features a three burner propane stove with oven and broiler, a deep double sink with fresh and salt water foot pumps in addition to the standard taps, a generously sized fridge and separate freezer, and lots of counter and storage space. The navigation station has a flip-up chart table, a large bookshelf, communications and navigation electronics close at hand and a huge amount of storage space.
Moving forward, you enter the main salon proper, with its large settee/sea berth with lee cloth, to port, and a U-shaped settee and table to starboard. The table has been custom made out of select figured hardwoods and seats six for dinner. Numerous lockers abound, all in varnished teak with louvered doors. The main salon is a living area which functions well, whether living aboard at anchor or at the dock, or counting off 180 mile days while at sea. Ventilation and lighting are excellent, with 10 opening bronze ports and 3 deck hatches.
Next is the forward cabin with a 6' 10" long double berth in high density memory foam. There are plentiful lockers and shelves, including a hanging locker, 4 opening bronze port lights, a deck hatch and dorade for ventilation, and an attached head with shower. The forward head is also accessible from the main salon.
Aft of the main salon, the boat is divided into three areas — the work/storage room, the engine compartment and the passageway to the aft cabin.
The work/storage room is accessible from the galley or from the cockpit and provides a huge amount of storage space as well as access to the port side of the engine.
The engine compartment absolutely shines, with every surface gleaming clean under high output lights. Access for routine maintenance is generous and well thought out. The engine is a 2012 Yanmar 75 HP diesel with 1,100 hours. It moves the boat at 7.3 knots using 1.4 gallons per hour. With 150 gallons of fuel, the range under power is over 750 miles. Fuel filtration is via dual switchable Racor high capacity filters with integral vacuum gauge.
The passageway provides great access to the engine compartment and to the large tool/spares locker.
The aft end of the passageway opens into the private owner's cabin. There is a 6' 5" center-line berth in high density memory foam and plentiful lockers including a large hanging locker. The cabin has a private head with shower, direct access to the cockpit via its own companionway and is well lit and ventilated by 4 opening bronze port lights, two deck hatches and a dorade vent.
